In 2003 the M/V Henry Island was built in La Conner, WA, and put into service, joining the M/V Nordland in offering our customers a variety of cost effective solutions for transporting freight throughout the San Juan Islands. The M/V Nordland sailed its final voyage in 2007 and was retired after many years of faithful service. From the Port of Friday Harbor, the M/V Henry Island is able to serve all of the San Juan Islands and the outer Islands in Whatcom County (Port Bellingham) and Skagit County (Port Anacortes).

San Juan Ferry & Barge General Manager and barge captain Marty Starr was born and raised on San Juan Island. He grew up working the local island waters in the early 70's with his father on commercial salmon gillnetters, purse seine boats and reefnet boats. In 1985, he began sailing offshore as mate for Foss Maritime on ocean going tugs, sailing in waters from Florida to the Aleutian Islands in Alaska. He later spent 10 years working as mate aboard fishing vessels in the Bering Sea for Glacier Fish Co.
